  3.   al Battani (858-929 AD), leading Arab astronomer 
  4. (and astrologer) of his time, worked in an 
  5. astronomical observatory in Baghdad and advanced the 
  6. study of apherical trigonometry, producing a table of 
  7. cotangents for use in astronomical (and astrological) 
  8. calculations. 
  9.    He also corrected errors in Ptolemy's calculation 
  10. of the inclination of the ecliptic and duration of 
  11. the year.
