al-BATTANI, ISLAMIC ASTRONOMER: 829 AD
al Battani (858-929 AD), leading Arab astronomer
(and astrologer) of his time, worked in an
astronomical observatory in Baghdad and advanced the
study of apherical trigonometry, producing a table of
cotangents for use in astronomical (and astrological)
calculations.
He also corrected errors in Ptolemy's calculation
of the inclination of the ecliptic and duration of
the year.
